Big Shot – from Stockholm Olympic Stadium to City Centre


In 2008 DN Galan added another innovation to the family of DN Galan Events. With an aim to bring athletics from the arena and out to the people DN Galan took Shot Put to Kungsträdgården, a square downtown Stockholm. A complete shot put arena was built up in front of the permanent stage, stands and sponsor areas was added. The international shot put elite participated and the competition was framed by music, show and entertainment in true DN Galan spirit. DN Galan Big Shot was born and the inaugural winners were Adam Nelson, USA, 20.75, and Nadezhda Ostapchuk, Vitryssland, 20.33.

2009: National record by Majewski
The second year the concept was improved both in arena construction and spectators. The stands and surrounding fens was packed with people and at its peak – Elite men’s competition – had around 1000 people watching. It became one of the best shot put competitions in 2009. Big Shot was won by the Olympic Champion Tomas Majewski that produced a Polish record with 21.95. Nadine Kleinert, Germany, won the women's title with a throw of 19.48.

2010: The start of Diamond League
On 5 August 2010 Big Shot was upgraded when the men’s DN Galan Big Shot a was part of the new Diamond League series and most of the world’s best throwers took part in the hunt for the diamond. The meet also included Youth Shot.
The VIP area was be improved and there were press, media and the VIP elite of athletics warming up for the DN Galan Diamond League at the Olympic Stadium the day after. World champion Christian Taylor from the USA won the men's competition in 22.09 which was a meet record and got a diamond! Nadezhda Ostapchuk, BLR, won the women's competition (20.63).

2011: Second victory for Cantwell
Christian Cantwell defended his victory with a throw of 21.70, ten centimeters ahead of Tomasz Majewski. In the women's competition Valerie Adams from Nya Zeeland won for the first time at DN Galan Big Shot (20.57).

2012: New Stadium record by Valerie Adams
Because of the 100th anniversary of Stockholm Olympic Stadium Big Shot was held in the stadium and not in Kungsträdgården. Valerie Adams won her second straight victory in the meet and her 20.26 was a new stadium record which earned her a diamond! The old record was 19.93 från 1980 (Maria Elena Sarria, ITA).
The male winner was Reese Hoffa, bronze medallist in the London Olympics, who throw 21.24.

In 2013 DN Galan Big Shot will be held in Kungsträdgården, Stockholm, on Wednesday 21 August.
